Clinical Study of Liver Abscess

Abstract
Our experience is based on a clinical study of 286 cases with liver abscesses seen in our hospital during the past 7 years and 10 months period, from January, 1965 to Octover, 1972. The most important reason for complication and mortality appears to have been the late recognition of accurate diagnosis and of requiring surgical drainage.
1. Among 286 cases of liver abscesses, 55.6% were amebic., 17. 1% were pyogenic, 8% were mixed type and 19.2% were unconfirmed type and 62.2% were surgical treated groups.
2. Regarding the age, the average was 45 years, and revealed greater prevalence in 3rd decade (32.6%), with a ratio of 3 males to 1 females.
3. The most common symptoms and signs were right upper abdominal pain, fever and chills, hepatic tenderness, and hepatomegaly.
4. The useful diagnostic procedures were diagnostic liver aspiration, liver scanning and exploratory laparotomy.
5. Anatomical locaization of liver abscesses 78. 5% were right lobe, 22. 5% were left lobe, and 45.5% were anterior segment, 30.9% were posterior segment, 15. 2% were lateral segment, 7. 3% were medial segment and 1. 1% were medial-posterior segment. (caudate lobe).
6. Mortality rate were 5% in surgical treated group.
